Ok, let’s face it. When’s the last time you heard of someone building a chicken coop? Before about a month ago, my response to that question would be no one.

Let me give you a bit of a personal story. I was searching Google for ways to go green at my house. I wasn’t having much luck at first…then I clicked on the one link that made my dreams come true. In the link I found a blog post made by someone who had built a chicken coop. In it, he described ways he went green with his chicken coop and he recommended a specific e-book that I then proceeded to buy. I then wanted to build a chicken house. So I read through the e-book, made multiple copies of it, and started working.

Here’s what I found. You can actually put your old table scraps to use with a chicken coop. I always felt bad when I threw away my old food scraps. But now I can literally watch the transformation from useless food scrap into fresh chicken egg. It’s quite amazing. I can also use the chicken poop that is collected from the coop and use it for fertilizer!

Not only do you go green, but you save green as well. Have you ever thought about how much money your family spends on eggs? The number is pretty staggering. Egg’s aren’t the most expensive thing on your grocery list, but they are always there, which adds up in your pocketbook.

Not only do you never have to buy eggs again, you can also sell extra eggs that you get from the chicken coop. If you don’t want to sell them, then give them away as gifts! Everyone loves eggs, especially eggs laid fresh that morning!

So no more wasting time. You know you want to build a chicken coop. If you’ve seen the recent news, you know how cruel some of those chicken coop factories are. The chickens barely have room to spread their wings! So do the right thing. You’ll not only make some chickens happy, you’ll also make mother nature happy. Not to mention your wallet.

What are Your Plans for Chicken Coop? What! You don’t have any plans for chicken coop? Why ever not? Haven’t you heard about how amazingly beneficial chicken coops can be for the environment?

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably never even considered building a chicken coop of your own. This is probably because of two things. You never really even think about chicken coop (I mean really, how many people think about chicken coops on a daily basis?) and their advantages have never truly been brought to life in your eyes. Let’s change both of those things.

Chicken coops are as old as time itself. As soon as the first person ate the first chicken egg, they were well sought after. But who wants to run after chickens and raid their nests every day? That’s not worth the effort! So someone (Who must be a genius, I might add) thought “Hey, Let’s make a little house for these chickens so they are comfortable and we don’t have to go chasing after them all day!” Those “little houses” were later coined chicken coops.

Now that you know a little about chicken coops, you are going to think about them every day aren’t you? No? Ok then, let’s get down to the nitty gritty and illuminate the blessings that you’d receive if you were to build your very own chicken coop. Then you’ll think about it every day, I’d bet.

For one, your house would take a step in the green direction. Being green is all about using earth’s resources to the fullest and wasting nothing. So how do chicken coops help with that? Well for one, you are able to recycle your old food (Table scraps anyone?) into the chicken coop, and out come fresh, delicious eggs. At no charge to you, I might add. You can also use chicken’s waste for fertilizer! No more paying absurd amounts of money for dignified cow poop, now you can use your own chicken poop to make your plants healthy and strong.

For two, you’d save quite a bit of money. It’s not going to pay your mortgage, by any means, but it will cut down on the number of items in your grocery list! Think about how often you buy eggs, and then imagine yourself never, ever having to buy eggs again. You also save money on fertilizer!

But if you own a chicken coop you can turn those food scraps into eggs. That’s right, food scraps are a viable source of food for chickens. Also, the waste generated by your chickens provide a free and excellent fertilizer for your plants.

While making a coop for your chicken, there is one important factor to be kept in mind. You are giving them a home. So what I’m going to do is share with you some simple tips on how to make a chicken coop.

Here are a few minimum requirements:

Security: Protect your chicken from neighborhood predators like cats, dogs and raccoons. Build a chicken wire surrounding the coop, which is 1 foot deep. To give your chicken protection from extreme whether conditions and theft, build doors and windows that are properly screened with mesh wire. The doors and windows should open inwards. Windows can also be sliding, in which case, wire mesh is not required.

Ventilation, Light Source and Drainage: This is another tip on how to make a chicken coop. The coop should face the sun to give the chicken ample sunlight to live and breed in a healthy way. Electric lighting may be suitable if you want the chicken to lay eggs round the year. To give your chicken coop good drainage, set it up on a highly placed area, with dry soil. The door should be placed a little bit downhill to allow the water to escape after spraying the coop. The doors or windows should allow fresh air to enter the coop.

Chicken Run: The coop is usually accompanied by a run, the area which surrounds the coop. The perimeter of the run has to be decided keeping in mind the locality. If you feel that there might be serious threat to your chicken from predators you might decide on tightly fenced or totally enclosed chicken coop rather than the free-ranging variety.

In addition to the above you also need to be careful about the water source and the feeder, which should provide clean drinking water and healthy chicken food without making the coop dirty. Last but not the least, another tip on how to make a chicken coop is to make sure that the material used for making the coop is durable.

The other way you can obtain eggs is through the use of your very own chicken coop. The chickens lay eggs on a regular basis.

In fact, you’ll often find yourself having more than enough eggs depending on your chicken-person ratio. What are the advantages of this method? There are two. One is price. We all know the economy is harsh nowadays. Why not save a few bucks by getting free eggs? The chickens will repay the little cost that you spent on them initially very quickly. The other is convenience. You’ll never have to make that 20 minute drive to the grocery store again. Just walk into your backyard and there are the eggs!
